Indian Classical Dances

Dance in India has an unbroken tradition from ancient times.In this two main forms, Classical and Folk.If talking about Classical form of dance,these are eight styles. Folk dance based on regions.

Classical Dance Styles

1. Bharatanatyam:-

It also known as SadiraAttam. This is a major form of Indian Classical dance.In this dance form have 6 sections.This style of dance famous in Tamil nadu State. Its symbol is Agni. Famous Personalities like Sonal Mansingh, Bala Swarsati etc.

2. Kathak :-

Word "Kathak", derived form sanskrit word "Katha", means story, who tells this called "kathakar". In this form dancers tells stores through hand movements and extensive footwork. Popular in Central , North and Western India. Kathak  is  found in 3 distinct  forms called "Gharanas", Like Banaras, Jaipur and Lucknow.Famous Personalities like Pandit Birju Maharaj, Kumudini Lakhia, Sobhna Narayan etc.

3. Kathakali:-

In this kind , Performer dressing up colorful cloths and makeup then tells story in the form of dance . This dance is famous in Malayalam speaking Indian State Kerala.In this dance form the "Tease Method",is used for characters with hidden dangerous intentions. Famous Personalities like Guru Gopinath.

4.Kuchipudi:-

This kind of dance form named after a village "Kuchipudi", of  Krishna District Andhara Pradesh.. This dance form created by Sidhyendra Yogi who was performed dance drama Bhama Kalapam, in which shows A story of SatyaBhama(Wife Of Lord Krishna). Famous Personalities of this dance form is Yamini Krishnamurthy, Indrani Rahman & Hema Malini.

5.Manipuri:-

This form of dance originated from North Eastern State Manipur. This dance also known as 'Jagoi". In this form , Basically perfomer shows Radha Krishna raslila and spirituals values. Famous Personalities like Guru Bipin Singh , Jhaveri Sisters etc.

6. Mohiniyattam:-

This type of dance also belongs from Kerala. This dance name from word "Mohini", means feminine powers.Lots of work in this dance form done by King Swathi Thirunal Rama Verma.Famous Personalities of this dance form is Mukundraja Krishna Panicker,Thankamony and K K Amma.

7. Odissi :-

This type of dance form belongs to Indian Coastal State Odisha.In this dance form performer expressed message and devotional poems via dance style.Traditionally two kinds of styles (Maharis & Gotipuas), Maharis means spiritual Temple dance and Gotipuas means Boys dressed as girls. Famous Personalities of this dance form is Kelucharan Mohapatra, Gangadhar Pradhan, Pankaj Charan Das and Raghunath Dutta.

8.Sattriya:-

This  is a major kind of Classical dance from eastern State Assam.. It is a dance drama performance by artists. Ankiya Nat is a One act play of this form of dance. Lots of work related to this form done by "Bhakti movement" saint Mahapurush Shrimanta Shankardev. Many styles of this dance form popular is Suthradhara .
