This is a highly easily transmitted disease caused by primary infection with varicella zoster virus (VZV). The disease is most commonly observed in children.
The disease starts 15-20 days after exposure to a person suffering from chicken pox. Nasal secretions, sputum and even shed scabs are highly infectious. After latent period of malaise and low grade fever, red patches appear all over the body. Fluid filled blisters then appear. These developed a central punctate depression and then become black scabs and then became black. scabs and fall off. Recovery occurs in 10 days.
Chicken pox is usually a mild, childhood disease from which spontaneous recovery occurs. Even the scars and scabs disappear in a couple of months, provided they were not scratched and secondarily infected. But in 10 percent of patients, serious complications can set in. Pregnant women can develop pneumonia. If infection occurs in the first three months of pregnancy, the baby may later developmental delay and mental retardation. Secondary, bacterial infection can occur, leading to a spike in fever and severe illness. In rare cases, the liver, lungs and brain may be affected. It can cause sterility in men and women. The scars in infected chicken pox may not disappear.
It is a preventable disease. The varicella vaccine needs to be administered after the first birthday. Infection is unlikely until that time. Babies have antibodies against varicella that have crossed over to them while they were in the uterus and also from breast milk. After the first dose, a booster needs to be given at the age of 4-5 years to bolster immunity.
