Inherited Blood Disorder

Thalassaemia is a blood disorder that a child inherits from parents. The body makes an abnormal form of haemoglobin that affects the deliver of oxygen to cells and tissues of the body.

Haemoglobin is the protein in red blood cells (RBC), that carries oxygen. Children have to depend on lifelong blood transfusions.







BLOOD TRANSFUSION AND INFECTIONS:-

Repeated transfusions can expose child to transfusion - transmitted infections like HIV, Hepatitis B,C and malaria.

Hepatitis, An inflammation of liver which can be self limiting or can progress to fibrosis (scarring), cirrhosis or liver cancer. There are 5 main hepatitis viruses, Referred as A,B,C,D and E.
Type B & C are the most dangerous.

Hepatitis B Virus:-
Is transmitted through exposure to infective blood, semen, body fluids. It can also be transmitted during birth or through transfusions. Vaccines available to prevent HBV.

Hepatitis C Virus:-
Is transmitted through exposure to infective blood at the time of blood transfusions. No vaccine available for this. 


Advisory:-
  • Blood should be collected from regular donors.
  • Stringent screening.
  • Advanced testing methods.
