Organ Donation Day in India is celebrated on 6th of August every year by the people, government organizations and other related professions in order to motivate normal human beings to donate the organs as well as to understand the value of organ donation in the life of an individual. 

- Organs are used to save lives by replacing diseased organs with healthy ones.
- At least 7 lives can be saved if one person is able. 
- At times some organs are not suitable for transplant even if the family has agreed to donate the   following - Heart, Kidneys,Liver Lungs, Pancreas , small intestine.
- Such Life saving organs can only be donated in the case of brain death where tissues can be donated after Cardiac death as well. 

Donation After Brain Death:-

  1. Loss of Brain Function, Means Brain Death.

Donation may only be considered after the person has been declared brain dead. After this stage,can be donate
  • Organs such as the Heart, Liver , Kidneys and Pancreas. Apart from this small intestines and lungs have the best chance of successful transplantation when they have a constant supply of blood and oxygen.
  • A Ventilator supplies the necessary oxygen to those organs, enabling them to keep functioning and allows a windows of time for the co- ordination of the donation process.

Process to donate after Brain Death:-

  • After Doctors declare brain death.
  • After grief counsellor explains the possibility of organ donation 
  • After Family gives consent.
Transplantation Average time process takes,

Lungs        @  6Hrs
Heart        @   6 Hrs
Liver         @  12 Hrs
Pancreas  @  24 Hrs
Kidney     @  48 Hrs 



Donation After Cardiac Death:-

An unexpected death due to Heart problems, which occurs within one hours from the start of any cardiac related symptoms.

  • They can only donate tissues for transplantation as most tissues do not require a constant blood supply to be successfully transplanted. 
  • Tissues that can be donated -- Skin, Bone, Corneas, Heart Valves, Veins
  • One set of corneas are given to two people needing sight.
  • Heart valves are used valve replacement surgery, common in children.  
  • Skin graft are used for burn victims.

- Portion of Pancreas

- Eyes
- Heart Valves
- Skin & Fascia
- Bones & Tendons

- Hands 
- Uterus
- Ovaries
- Face
- Eyes
- Middle Ear Bones
